During our big yard sale last June, I sold our desk so now I am forced to write while sitting on my couch, in a chair, or at the dining room table. As you can imagine, sitting in those positions is not good for your back.
Some days, the back pain reminds of the long days that I used to spend been working in a restaurant. Those concrete floors are brutal on your entire body, as are the often overloaded trays. Being healthy is important to me. And having a healthy back is part of that.
I’m going to implement these four tips and see how I’m feeling:
- When blogging or doing other computer work, I will not twist myself into a knot on the couch.
- I will browse local consignment shops and yard sales for a desk. Perhaps I can transform something into a desk.
- In the morning and in the evening, I will stretch my arms and touch my toes. This should stretch out the knots that are in my back.
- I will be conscious of my posture.
Do you have back pain? How have you managed it?

I suffer from back pain too. It is especially bad since the baby is getting older and heavier. I stretch, put ice on my back lots.
Thank for your post! Have a great weekend!

I think stretching is going to help me the most. Looking forward to it!

Emily– Back pain can be the worst! I would recommend getting a great chair over a desk. The investment is worth the savings in back pain and cost of medications. I might also recommend that you make sure that your mattress is not causing undo harm either. Finally, you can’t go wrong with a little yoga in the morning and before you go to sleep at night. Good luck and I look forward to following your posts in the future! Love your site and the layout!

Hey Renee,
Thanks for the feedback. Our mattress is not even three years old, it’s in excellent shape. I think part of the problem is I find that I now have horrible posture. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I’m like “what the??”. I’m going to focus on that. And the stretching.
If those fail, I guess I’ll move from the couch to an appropriate chair!
Have a great weekend!

I honestly feel like I am physically unable to NOT sit like a pretzel on the couch. I went to physical therapy after a car accident and my therapist told me I’m going to get arthritis if I don’t stop, but it’s so hard! If you figure it out, you need to let me know the secret. 😉
Emily says
What?! You can get arthritis from sitting all “twisty”? Oh no, I’ve got to figure out how not to do it. I suppose sitting on the floor more often would help. But, that’s not really comfy and cozy.
Kiersten @ Oh My Veggies says
Well, maybe not always. But I have hypermobility too. When I was first diagnosed with it, I thought it was a good thing–like, oh, hey, I’m really flexible! But I guess you’re like SO flexible that you end up damaging your joints. 🙁

Back pain can be tricky. I had my fill of it. I ruptured a disc when I was pregnant with twins, so after they were delivered C-section, one month later I had the disc repaired, Took the pain right away. Now I just use heat if my back is painful. I hope you don’t have to resort to surgery, but I had to and it was well worth it. Have you had an MRI?
Emily says
No, I think it is from sitting improperly. I’ve been more conscious of my posture lately & it is subsiding. Glad to hear you’ve healed well!

I changed my diet and did wonders for my health. Alleviated my back pain considerably. All I ate for 30 days was fruit, vegetables, whole grains, fish, a bit of chicken and eggs. Nothing processed.
Emily says
Interesting, Ashley. I’m not a big processed food consumer – though I do love Trader Joe’s Organic Corn Flakes for breakfast. I’m considering one of those juice cleanses, but need to do some more research.
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your comments!
