With multiple half marathons under my belt, I am excited about how my training is paying off. I’ve been staying hydrated and paying attention to what I am eating and drinking. Which means fewer post-run beers and sweet treats! There are many road races of varying distances coming up as the season takes shape. These serve as a nice reminder that summer is on it’s way to Cape Cod and that I should make sure my summer running essentials are together.
There are a few basic running essentials that you need for every season, like running shoes and socks. But the warmer summer weather calls for additional gear like visors and hydration packs. It goes without saying that you should ALWAYS apply sunscreen when you’re headed outdoors for a run, but this is especially important for the summer. Please, protect your skin!

A running tank top. Look for one that is made from moisture wicking material to help you stay cool and dry. I prefer a tank as I feel cooler, and I want to avoid a farmer’s tan.
Running shorts. The only time I wear shorts is when I run in the summer. I’m not a fan of how shorts chop your legs. The realist in me knows it is too hot to run in capri pants during the summer. A nice pair of running shorts keeps me cool on long runs.
A hydration device. Some runners swear by wearable hydration packs, while others hide hydration along their route or carry a water bottle in their hand. Whatever works best for you, just be sure to drink water during your summer runs!
A quality pair of running shoes. Everyone has their favorite brand and their favorite model within that brand. My advice, visit your local running store and get properly fitted. You may find out that you’re wearing the wrong size shoe! I’m happy with Asics Gel-Cumulus these days!
A visor or hat. The brim of a visor or hat will help to shield the sunlight from your face. A visor will allow you to stay a little cooler, while the hat offers additional UV protection.
Sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the damaging rays of the sun. There are specialty brands of sunglasses created for runners which are designed to not slip down your nose. I wear an old pair of Raybans that fit snug to my face and rarely have an issue.
Wicking Socks. Y’all need these. If you’re running, your feet are sweating. The more they sweat, the more your risk of blisters increases. Invest in some nice wicking socks. Your feet will thank you.
Running belt. If you are carrying a lot of things with you, such as car keys, gels, or a phone, you’ll need a running belt to hold everything. I created this quick and easy sewing tutorial so you can make a DIY Running Belt of your own!
