When I think of Halloween, I don’t think of elaborate costumes and huge groups of children giggling as they run down the street hoping for a treat. I think of the Peanuts gang and the wonderful book It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
The Boy and I have been reading it for the last few weeks to get him familiar with the characters as we prep for the upcoming release of the Peanuts movie – oh and to get ready Halloween, of course. My heart breaks a little each time Charlie Brown finds a rock in his trick or treat bag. Doesn’t yours?
Snacking can be tricky around Halloween. With all of the treats you children collect on Halloween night – and the ones you buy to give out to the goblins in your neighborhood but devour before the big day and have to replace before the big day. [Wait! That’s not just me, is it?] One way to encourage your children to make better choices, is to have better options around the house.
1| Offer fresh fruit. The Boy is a huge fan of fresh fruit. I try to keep a variety on hand all year long, but especially during Halloween. Some of our favorites are strawberries, blueberries, and bananas
2| Offer fresh vegetables. We discovered rainbow baby carrots a few months ago and they are probably the most requested item in our house! They are sweet, as a carrot should be, but are packed with nutrients.
3| Stock Up on Horizon Organic products The crackers are delicious and everyone in our family enjoys them. How’s that for a snack everyone can agree on!
I was at Shaws a few days ago stocking up, and noticed that Shaws has partnered with The Peanuts Movie. While supplies last, you can snag a complimentary branded reusable shopping bag/trick or treat bag with the purchase of three qualifying items.
4| Everything in Moderation After you’ve eaten your favorite treats out of your child’s Halloween bag (come on, I cannot be the ONLY one who does this!), let them have one after dinner. Or before if you’re feeling extra cool!
Be sure to head to your neighborhood Shaws and purchase participating products to get your own Peanuts Trick or Treat bag! And, go see The Peanuts Movie November 6th. I’ll be there with a box of Horizon crackers in my purse! Shhh!
