I want to wish you all a very happy Independence Day. While you’re enjoying parades, fireworks, s’mores, and cole slaw, please take a moment to remember that we have our independence because of the brave souls who choose to fight for it.
Sixty months ago, began the Summer of Decision for many Marines. On July 2, the 2nd Battalion 8th Marines began Operation Khanjar in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. These Marines fought the longest foot assault since Vietnam. They were fighting for their lives, the lives of their brothers, and for our freedom every step of the way. They fought long, They fought hard.
Let’s celebrate our freedom with laughter and fun, but let’s not forget to give thanks to those who have given their lives so that we may walk free. I’ll be remembering, and thinking of, Nicholas Ziarhos.
