Caramelizing onions is a fairly easy task which gives you a gloriously tasty product! We enjoy caramelized onions on chicken, in pasta dishes, and my favorite way – on pizza. This is an easy way to caramelize onions and should take about 35 minutes, start to finish.
What you’ll need:
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
3 medium red onions, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon extra fine sugar
1/4 cup of your favorite beer (optional, but highly recommended)
What you’ll do:
In cast iron skillet, heat butter and oil over medium-high heat. (If you don’t have cast iron, use your favorite saute pan.) Add onions and stir constantly until onions begin to soften, about 5 minutes.
Sprinkle sugar over onions and continue cooking until the onions are deep brown. This should take about 25 minutes.
If using, add beer and let simmer for 5 minutes.
Whether using beer or not, the caramelized onions should be served immediately. If you double the batch, they’ll keep in the fridge for two weeks when tightly sealed.

It does take a bit of patience, and practice, too! They’re so worth it in the end. Give it a shot one day, you may surprise yourself.
