If you think children in your area aren’t going hungry in your area, chances are you’re wrong. As I shared in my first post about creating a Hunger Free Summer, when children are out of school, they’re at great risk for hunger.
ConAgra Foods’ Hunger Free Summer initiative with Feeding America set a goal to reach 25 percent more children than the year before; and they plan to beat this goal annually for the next five years. They’ve helped food banks across the country; yet there are still hungry children.
How can you help create a hunger free summer?
Kid President has teamed with ConAgra Foods to raise awareness of child hunger this summer. All you have to do is watch this short video and a donation will be made. Thanks to the incredibly positive response so early-on, the ConAgra Foods Foundation has doubled its commitment to 2 million meals!
In my community, I plan to make regular donations to the local food bank. I know that there are a number of children that receive free – or reduced cost – lunches during the school year. My donations to the food bank will help ensure their bellies are full this summer.
When making donations to your food bank, keep in mind that they are unable to accept expired food items, dairy and items that are ready to eat (like hot pizza and rotisserie chickens). Items like cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna, and nuts are great options to donate.
I’ve teamed up with Feeding America and several bloggers to share our ideas for creating a child-like summer on Pinterest. The board is full of great ideas on how you can join the cause in your local community, summer fun, inspiration and so much more.
What are you doing to help create a hunger free summer in your community?
