Feeding my son nutritious and delicious food all day long is something that I value. When he goes off to school for two days per week, I send along “special” crackers for his teachers to serve him along side the school provided fruits and vegetables at snack time. Why don’t I let him eat the school provided crackers, too? Because I’ve read the labels, ladies! The crackers they were are serving to the toddlers are laced with high fructose corn syrup and other ingredients that I can’t pronounce. If you can’t say it, you should not be eating it.
When I was given the opportunity to review Lunch Wars by Amy Kafka as part of the BlogHer Book Club, I was thrilled! Judging by the title, I had hope that the book would fill me with information on how to point our educational leaders in the right direction when it comes to food. Nutrition is a vital part of success, the better nutrition, the better off you’ll be.
Amy Kalafa you did not disappoint me!! From the first chapter to the last, I learned something. I learned that there are a lot of terrible ingredients in our food, and that the FDA permits this garbage to be in our food. I learned that some children rely on school for two meals per day – and that those may be the only two meals they’re eating. I learned that the battle for what is served to our children in schools is political, it is expensive – and that it is our children who will suffer.
While not every school district is serving food with unpronounceable ingredients, there are too many that are. As parents, we need to involve ourselves in everything that is going on in school. And that includes the kitchen. Grab Amy Kalafa’s book, arm yourself with knowledge, and get out there and fight for our children! This is a war that we can win!
This was a paid review for BlogHer Book Club but the opinions expressed are my own.
