Some days, I wish I could take my own advice. We have been enjoying a summer long staycation on Cape Cod, and I’m the one that got sick. It started the first weekend in August, and just two days ago I started feeling like myself again. What a long road it was for me! Here are some tips for staying healthy while enjoying your staycation:
1. Drink lots of water. In the summer, I find myself drinking less water than I do in the winter. Isn’t that funny? Because we’re on the go so much, we often grab beverages out. Since I am already being charged a premium for my beverage I tend to lean toward margaritas…errr, and iced coffees. If I were drinking water, my immune system would be in better shape and I (probably) wouldn’t have caught this miserable head cold.
2. Eat lots of fruits and veggies. I lean more towards fruits in the summer, and more toward veggies in the winter. Bizarre, eh? There are so many seasonal vegetables available in the summer months all taste wonderful grilled or raw. Like cherry tomatoes from the garden. Yum. Still, I always seem to want watermelon and berries.
3. Wash your hands often. This is one area that I excel in. Hooray for me! I hate germs, hate public restrooms, public transportation, shopping carts, etc. Do you know how many people don’t wash their hands during the day?! Gross. If you don’t have access to wash your hands, use a hand santizier.
I washed my hands after meeting Tim Wakefield. Poor guy had to shake so many hands, I’m sure he was crawling with germs. I really feel for celebrities.
4. Get plenty of rest. Unless you’re in Las Vegas, it’s fairly easy to slow down and force yourself to go to sleep. On Cape Cod, with the cool sea breeze, you’re able to sneak a nap or two on the beach before heading out on the town. (Wait, I don’t head out on the town, but I still need those naps!)
5. Consider adding a probiotic to your family’s diet, like . If you’re eating too much fun stuff and not drinking enough water, it’s easy for your stomach to go off course. Culturelle Kids is trusted by parents and pediatricians to provide healthy maintenance of the digestive tract.
