Friends! We are doing it! We are going to survive back to school season this year! Trust me. For many of you, you’ve been in your routine for the better part of a month; but those of us in the North are just getting our routine down. We’ve been doing this school thing for 18 days. And, I’ve figured out how we’re going to make it!
These three ways to survive back to school season are sure to make your days smoother.
1) Hold Your Children Accountable. Yep. I said it. We’re all in this together, right? The children are the ones headed off all day to soak up the world. They need to have the proper tools with them. One way to ensure they’re ready to go is to make them responsible for their backpacks and all the items they need for each day. Each night, talk with them about the schedule for the following day and tell them to gather their violins, gym clothes, and whatever mystery item they need for the day. Helping your children learn their schedule teaches them responsibility and preparedness; both life skills they’ll need as adults.
2) Don’t Sign Up For Every Activity. As parents, we want our children to have the opportunity to experience a variety of activities so they kind find their “thing”. It’s great to expose your children to soccer, field hockey, piano, and art classes, but not if you’ve packed their schedules so full there is no time to just be a kid. Think back to your childhood: was it filled with activities every day? It probably wasn’t. This business of scheduling every minute of childhood is getting out of hand. Schedule time for your kid to be a kid. To sit and play at home creatively. Build a blanket fort. Make an art project to send to the grandparents that live far away. Just let them be kids. There are only 6575 days in childhood, don’t spend them all driving in the car.
3) Spend time with them. Take your child on a date. It’s important for a child to have one-on-one time with each parent, regardless of your living situation. A great way to have some fun time with your little one is to take them to McDonald’s for a Happy Meal. Did you know that McDonald’s now offers wholesome options such as Apple Slices and Go-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry yogurt. Additionally, you can choose from 1% low-fat while milk, fat-free chocolate milk and 100% apple juice as the perfect beverage pairing for your child’s Happy Meal. Later this fall, customers can expect to see Cuties clementines from Sun Pacific included as a Happy Meal side as well. Each Happy Meal is affordably priced at $2.99! Use this meal time to talk about what they love about school and what they would change about school if they could.
