When I think about Christmas, my mind quickly floats back to memories of chocolate oranges in my stocking. These chocolate oranges were a favorite of my dad, and he passed along my love for the two flavors. As I’ve gotten older, I am more conscious about ingredients and fresh foods. This year, I decided to make chocolate orange slices using ingredients that I selected.
I picked up a bag of Halos mandarins from my local grocer and used the semi-sweet chocolate chips and fleur de sel that we had on hand. Fleur de sel is a fancy sea salt; Kosher salt or traditional sea salt should work well too.
Peel the mandarins and separate them into sections; reserve the peel to toss in your fireplace or simmer in in stove top potpourri. Melt 2 tablespoons of semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave for 45 seconds. Check the consistency, it should be smooth and creamy. You may need to add a few seconds, add time in 10-15 second intervals, giving your chocolate a good stir.
Dip the mandarin segments in the melted chocolate and place them on a baking sheet covered with wax paper. Repeat this process until all segments are coated in chocolate. Work quickly to prevent the chocolate from hardening. Sprinkle with a bit of fleur de sel and place baking sheet in refrigerator to set.
In fifteen minutes, you’ll have a beautiful, healthy treat.
Try using dark chocolate chips and adding chopped pistachio in lieu of the salt.
Ingredients
- 2 Mandarins (or clementines), peeled
- 2 TBSP semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
- Fleur de Sel for garnish

What a cute idea! I’ve never tried chocolate and oranges together. I think this would be so much fun for my girls and me to do together. Two things all of us love – oranges and chocolate! Yum. Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
I love that it brings back special memories from your dad as well 🙂
