If you’ve ever lived in New England, known anyone who has, or watched a news broadcast there is a good chance you have seen frozen pipes. And it isn’t pretty.
You’ve heard me brag about my love for our outdoor shower, and my desire to leave somewhere that would allow us to use it year round. Until that happens, we are faced with having to drain the pipes before winter to prevent an awful, awful mess. And by we, of course I mean The Texan.
Our basement is a full basement on one side (YAY!) and a small, crawl space (BOO!) on the other side. The pipes for the outdoor shower are in the crawl space. With the bugs. And the spiders. And who knows what else?! There isn’t much effort into draining the pipes. The Texan crawls under the house and turns off the two valves that lead to the shower. Meanwhile, I’m outside waiting for him to holler (he’s a Texan, so he hollers, he doesn’t yell.) “Okay!” Once I get the go ahead, I open the shower faucets and watch the remaining water trickle out of the pipes.
It is always a sad day for me when we have to close down the outdoor shower. This year has been particularly heartbreaking as we’ve had unseasonably warm weather. Yesterday, the first day of winter, it was 54 degrees. In the spring, I turn the outdoor shower on when temps are forecast to reach 50.
Counting the days until Spring 2012…
