Welcome to Week Six of the Color, Click Capture Photography Challenge hosted by East9thStreet, A Helicopter Mom, Nap Time Is My Time and Sunshine and Sippy Cups. This week’s color is PURPLE!

If you know me in real life, then you’re well aware of my track record with indoor plants. If they’re not faking it, there not making it in our house. A few weeks ago, I picked up this cute little Iris for $2.49.
Beautiful, don’t you think? I’m so happy that I splurged and spent the $2.49!
This week we’re bringing you two more tips from Jen Villa, photographer, collage artist and owner of The Little Beach Gallery in Hyannis, Massachusetts. As we mentioned last week, she is a trained photographer and alumni of world-renowed photography school, Brooks Institute of Photography. Her photography and artwork have a very unique style and combine her love for the ocean and passion for travel.
Tip #3
Speed and Focus.
If shooting running children or generally active subjects (which most are) you want to shoot quickly. So, make sure you shutter speed is high and then you can play with F-stop, which controls the range of focus. It’s fun to blur out the background with portraits and detail shots; for these I prefer a 2.8 F stop if that’s an option or the lowest # available.
Tip #4
OVERSHOOT.
The beauty of digital is that you can shoot for hours for virtually free. It takes time to get the perfect shot, so don’t be shy about snapping away. I will suggest that you go through and edit your shoots sooner than later, so that you can have a manageable library of files. In terms of editing (which is in some ways a whole craft in it’s self), try to not think too much about deleting an image. Look for nice lighting, composition and focus and there’s your shot!
Want to participate in our challenge? It’s super easy! Here’s how It Works:
- Take a picture the represents the color of the week.
- Write a blog post that features your picture and link it up.
- Visit other people’s posts and hopefully find some inspiration!
- You can put the button and link code on your blog if you wish but it’s not a requirement.

Those are gorgeous and worth every penny! 🙂 I am usually pretty good with plants, but I just lost a bunch because my cat was chewing on them! 🙁 Good luck with yours! I think I may have to stick to planting outside…
Well…what I didn’t write was that the beautiful flowers have died, and how I have a plant with amazing green shoots all over it. I am wondering if I should transplant it outside. I have never tried an indoor Iris, and don’t really know what to do with it!
What a pretty Iris! I would have killed the poor unsuspecting thing by now, so you’re doin’ great in my book! And… I know it’s not purple, but… I LOVE the vase sitting on the floor nearby. Really cool.
Thanks! The vase on the floor was a gift from The Texan several years ago. It came from Pier One Imports.
I love Iris’! They are really easy to grow! When they start to die out in your home, go plant them outside in your garden. Check online how to position the bulbs…some like to sit different in the dirt, and they all have different depths. They will come back every year though, and spread too.
