This easy almond butter recipe is a great way to ensure you’re incorporating whole foods into your diet without a lot of fillers. Finding an almond butter that isn’t filled with ingredients other than almonds is getting harder and harder. To make matters worse, because of the growing demand for almond butter, the supermarkets in our area are often out of stock; and when they do have almond butter in stock the cost is outrageous.
I made this homemade almond butter recipe for $2.50, plus the cost of electricity. Can’t beat that with a stick!
This almond butter recipe is easy!
The first step is getting your almonds ready. Roasting raw almonds at home is easy, and takes about 10 minutes in a preheated 350° oven. Pour two cups of raw almonds onto a baking sheet and pop them into the oven while you set up your food processor. I keep my KitchenAid food processor on the counter, so my set up was quick – just adding the blade to the bowl.
If you’ve never roasted almonds before, you’ll know they are ready by the amazing smell that permeates your kitchen. It should smell very almondy. Visually, the almonds should be golden brown. Once your almonds are roasted, pour them into the bowl of your food processor.
This is where you’ll need your patience. After about five minutes in the food processor, it will look like this:
This is almond flour. It’s great for breading chicken and baking. In fact, many people following a Paleo lifestyle, make their own almond flour. But today, we’re not making almond flour. Turn your food processor on again and let it process for a long time. Nearly ten minutes later, I saw the first signs of my almond butter coming together. It was finally starting to get creamy.
You need patience more than anything to make almond butter. Another ten minutes goes by, and I finally have gorgeous almond butter!
Spoon it into a mason jar and store in the refrigerator. Isn’t it beautiful? It is so creamy. And delicious.
It tastes amazing on crackers, sandwiches, and in smoothies.
And right off a spoon. That’s really the best way.

You have me drooling for almond butter! Not only does it look gorgeous but I can almost smell it through the pictures!
Don’t you wish computers were scratch and sniff?! It was so easy to make, give it a shot!
I’ve never tried almond butter before but I think I’d rather make it myself anyway. I didn’t realize it was so easy!
I love homemade almond butter! I like to add a little cinnamon..but I’ve been known to add chocolate too. For the antioxidants and all 😉
Hmmm – adding chocolate sounds like a brilliant idea. For the antioxidants.
Yum! TJ’s almonds are super affordable too, even more incentive to try and make this! Do you know what the shelf life is after you’ve made it?
The shelf life is about one day in our house, it is so good it hardly lasts! This recipe makes one cup, it should store in the refrigerator tightly sealed for 7 – 10 days.
I’m totally going to make this. Do you think it would be okay if I added a bit of honey and vanilla? I’ve never made it before but now I really wank to!
I had no idea this was so simple to make! I’ll definitely have to make some.
It’s simple and your house will smell amazing, too! Enjoy it!
That looks way easier to make than I thought it would be. My daughter loves Nutella and other flavored and nut butter type spreads, so I bet she would really love this. 🙂
I bet it would be great with a little chocolate added to it as well!
My husband and I have been wanting to try almond butter, and I never knew how easy it was to make at home. I think we will make it rather than buy it now!
I’ve made this a few times, it tastes so much better than store bought!
Yum! That looks so easy and delicious!
I nearly fell over when I realized how easy this is to make. The hardest thing is being patient while it goes from the “flour” stage to the “butter” stage!
AMAZING!! Never thought it could be this easy! I fell over haha. I will make this soon!
I made mine with a Nutri Bullet with the blade for nuts. It only took a couple of minutes.
That’s a great idea, Vicki!
This looks great! Can you make it without roasting the almonds? Just raw almonds?
I think the roasting adds to the almond-y flavor, but it should be fine prepared with raw almonds.
Thanks!
OMG! I just made this awesome stuff. Yum! I had a bag of almonds in the cabinet that were already roasted and salted (that’s all I had) so I thought I would try it. It took me about fifteen minutes, That was so easy, The next time I’m going to buy them raw and roast them myself to get the full experience and taste. Thanks for the idea!
So happy you enjoyed it!
We recently started checking ingredients on everything we eat and it really is hard to find food that’s not full of junk. I will be trying this out.
Let me know how you like it!
I never thought of making my own almond butter! Sounds pretty simple. Love the completely natural way of cooking! Fabulous!
We go through so much nut butter that I found it was more affordable to make it myself – the savings is significant and tastes so much better!
I love making my own nut butters, it’s fun to come up with different combinations and they taste so much better when they’re fresh.
I agree – they do taste much better! Next on my list is to try making sunflower seed butter.
I only have a ninja chopper. What kind of food processor do I need to make this?
Hi Sammi – I made this using a KitchenAid 7 cup food processor. I’m not familiar with a Ninja chopper, so I can’t speak to the durability of the motor.
I have recently read that roasted almonds are not as healthy for you because the roasting creates a chemical change in them that can contribute to health issues like cancer. How would this taste with not roasting the almonds? And would it work if you soak the almonds in order for the body to more readily absorb the nutrients & digest them? Thanks!
Hi Dawn,
I’m not sure how it would taste if you didn’t roast the almonds or if it would work to soak the almonds first. My initial thoughts on the soaking was that it might yield a creamier almond butter. I’ve soaked cashews before and used them in a cream sauce, I suppose it might work for an almond butter as well. If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out.
Thanks, I am going to make this tomorrow.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I love that I can make it myself now without sugar!
Thanks for stopping by, Rhonda! Enjoy the almond butter!
