When I think back to my childhood, I think about how young my parents were. And how much fun they were. While they’re not as young as they used to be, they’re still pretty fun. As I’ve gotten older, the type of fun my dad and I have together has changed.
We’ve traded bike rides for beer runs.
I have so many fun {and funny} memories of my dad and many of the crazy things we did together were so I would pick up a valuable lesson. Naturally, I didn’t know it at the time.
Don’t Drive Fast. This advice is handy if you’re cruising along the bike trail on your blue bike with a banana seat or if you’re cruising down the highway in your Volvo. Always obey the posted speed limit and you’re less likely to crash.
Arrange Your Closet in Rainbow Order. Following this piece of advice enables me to dress quickly. Again, helpful at any age: late for high school or trying to get out the door with a preschooler in tow.
Back Your Car into Your Driveway. Not only is it safer to back into your driveway when you get home, it is also safer for leaving the house.
A Benefit Isn’t a Benefit If You’re Not Using It. If your company offers you discounts on cell phone service, switch your plan! If your insurance plan includes an annual vision check, have your eyes screened! Pay close attention to all that is offered to you and use it!
Don’t Drink Beer that was Chilled, Unchilled, and Chilled Again. When I questioned him about this, his response was “because I said so.” I never questioned that advice again.
Certainly my dad taught me far more than just these few things. He has a way of teaching you an important lesson without saying anything. I suppose that comes from more than three decades in law enforcement. I am thankful that I have such a strong bond with both of my parents and look forward to learning more from them.
What are some {funny} lessons you learned from your dad?

Ooh, I’ve never tried the rainbow trick for my closet. That’s a good idea though my closet is dominated by reds, blacks and purples.

Great lessons! I’ve often thought about backing into the driveway and then don’t because I don’t think I’m a good backer-upper….but I back up to get out right? I agree with the chilled beer lesson too! There is so much we can learn from our dads. They’re pretty wonderful!
