February is a month filled with love and laughter. {I often wonder if Valentine’s Day falls in the winter to encourage snuggles and cuddles.} Anyhow, when I think about romantic movies, the first movie that comes to mind is Love Story.
Have you seen it?
Need a good cry?
Love Story tells the tale of wealthy Harvard law student Oliver Barrett III and working-class Radcliffe student Jennifer Cavalleri. What you think will be a typical rich guy – poor girl story, has an interesting twist: the rich guy doesn’t go running back to his family when his father threatens to sever ties with him for marrying Jenny. He moves ahead with the wedding, and subsequently gives up his family.
The two struggle financially until Oliver completes law school. They relocate to New York City and, after struggling with fertility issues, learn that Jenny is quite ill. The medical expenses are too much for the young lawyer to manage, he goes to his father for help. His {jerk of a} father asks if he got some girl “in trouble”. Rather than telling his father the truth that Jenny is ill, he simply says yes.
Sadly, Jenny dies. She was twenty-five. Oh, that movies gets me every time. Every. Single. Time.
You may be familiar with the phrase “Love Means Never Having to Say You’re Sorry” – it’s spoken twice in the movie. Once by Jennifer to Oliver when he is about to apologize to her for his anger. At the end of the movie, Oliver says it to his father when his father says “I’m sorry” after hearing of Jennifer’s death.
The movie was released in 1970 – and may be the reason that so many babies were named Jennifer during the 1970s!
What is your favorite romantic movie? Is there a particular quote from that film that resonated with you?

I adore this movie! My romantic movie changes sometimes it the Secretary other times Sliding Doors but today I’m going with Chasing Amy. I love when Holden tells Amy “I love you. And not, not in a friendly way, although I think we’re great friends. And not in a misplaced affection, puppy-dog way, although I’m sure that’s what you’ll call it. I love you. Very, very simple, very truly.” sigh
I’ve heard so many good things about Chasing Amy, but I’ve never seen it. Maybe during this blizzard I’m sitting through I’ll watch it via Amazon Prime!
Have a great weekend.
I’ve never seen Love Story but now I want too!
It’s THE BEST movie. I love it – but keep in mind that it was filmed in 1970, so it’s a bit lacking in cinematography. 🙂
I was born the same year this movie came out, so I have never seen, but now I want to and I’m pretty sure it will make me cry.
You need to see it Marti! It came out before I was born and I’ve seen it! Be sure to grab a box of Kleenex before hitting the play button.
I haven’t ever seen it..but I think maybe I should! 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation!
So many people haven’t seen this, it’s hard to believe that it’s my favorite. I hope you’ll have the chance to see it soon, it’s a beautiful story.
Have a great weekend.
Love Story is one of my very favorite movies. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it but the tears roll every time. Thanks for the great review.
YAY for another Love Story fan! It’s such a wonderful movie. Did you ever see Oliver’s Story – it was the sequel? (Awful in my opinion!)
This is an awesome movie. One of my favorite movies is Sabrina with Harrison ford. It’s a great movie.
I haven’t seen Sabrina. I’ll have to put it on my list!
I can honestly say that I have never seen this movie either but I would love to now!! I love to watch older movies like this one!! I will for sure have to keep my eye out for this movie now!! Thanks!!
I hope you enjoy it – be sure to have tissues handy!
I’ve seen Love Story and it’s a great movie. I haven’t seen it in a long time so I’m thrilled it’s on blue ray! Thanks for letting us know.
Hooray! So excited to find another Love Story fan.
I can’t believe I’ve never seen this movie! Sounds like a tearjerker…I will have to rent it!
You’ll need an entire box of Kleenex for this one!
what a sweet movie. never heard of this before
You should see it! It’s a beautiful story!
Although I love Love Story, my favorite love story is A Star is Born with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristoferson. The song she sings at the end “With One More Look at You/Are you Watching Me Now” gives me chills everytime.
I haven’t seen that one yet. Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll be sure to check it out.
Have a great day!
I totally want to see this, can’t believe I haven’t. I don’t think I could name a favorite love story/movie – I’m a sucker for pretty much all of them. Off the top of my head The Notebook is really awesome/sad/moving.
The Notebook is a great story – though I preferred the book to the film version. Let me know if you see Love Story and what you thought of it!
Have a great weekend!
I’ve never heard of this movie but the description tugged at my heart. I really love Say Anything and City of Angels.
It is such a wonderful movie! It came out before I was born, but I still love it! Cinematography leaves a bit to be desired, though!
I think I may have seen the movie several years ago. May be worth re visiting.
It’s worthy of another viewing – just be sure you have a box of tissues handy!
I.Love.This.Movie!!!! My parent’s wedding song was from this movie, and ever since I learned that, I’ve been obsessed with it. My other favorite movie is Dirty Dancing! “No one puts baby in the corner!”
That’s awesome! It’s such a beautiful story of true love.
I love Ali McGraw but have yet to see this movie! I need to see if this is on Amazon On Demand for Valentine’s Day!
Grab your Kleenex, too! It will get you crying for sure.
Add me to the “never seen it” list. Well, I’ve seen parts of it, but I always seem to catch it in the middle. I’m going to have to Netflix Love Story or something. I love a good crying movie.
What?! Please catch it on Netflix when you can. It is such a beautiful story.
I’ve never even heard of this movie before! It looks great, I’m gonna have to watch it.
Grab your kleenex box first!
I remember this movie. She was on Oprah and she said she didnt even know what that quote meant
My fave romantic movie is the notebook. He never gave up and reminds me of my one who got away. My fave part is when they’re standing in the rain and noah and allie just went for a boat ride and she asks why he didn’t write bc it wasn’t over for her and noah says ” I wrote u every day for a year. It still isn’t over!” And grabs her n kisses her… awww love it. Thanks for the above movie suggestion, can’t wait to watch it
I still need to see The Notebook! It’s been on my list for ages!
Sounds like a movie I would enjoy, but not my husband.
This was probably one of the first love story movies that I watched as a teenager. I was so sad and meaningful that I still remember the emotions I felt.
