I mentioned previously that I am an introvert, which means there are quite a few activities that move me out of my comfort zone.
My preference is to be with people that I already know, and participate in activities that I am familiar with. In college, I took a public speaking class which helped me increase my confidence speaking in front of groups. It turns out that class was a great choice. Part of my role at my corporate job was to facilitate training sessions to managers. Eeek! When I first started delivering these sessions, I was very nervous. Mostly because of the audience – these people were the faces of our company, they were delivering our brand message to the public every day. How’s that for intimidating? Knowing that they were shareholders like me helped to make it a bit more comfortable. After each session, I would receive feedback about the session – and it was always better than I expected!
These days, moving out of my comfort zone consists of heading to a new playground or signing The Boy up for a new activity. I often feel that those other moms are judging me, my parenting style, and my son’s behavior (which is great 95% of the time!). As my son gets older, I hope that I’ll be more comfortable interacting with other moms.
How often do you participate in activities that are out of your comfort zone?

I’m introverted too, but the weird thing is I used to LOVE public speaking. And then as I got older, I started to have more and more anxiety about it. I always think people are judging me and my husband tells me that they’re too busy worrying about themselves to be thinking about me–I’m pretty sure that’s true! 🙂

Your husband is probably right! Since I stopped working outside the home, I find that I actually MISS the public speaking aspect of my former job more than I thought I would.

When I was in high school I participated in public speaking competitions and did really well, but now it’s really difficult. I’m a nervous wreck speaking in front of people. Maybe when I was young I wasn’t smart enough to feel nervous, lol. 🙂
