If you read my Week in the Life posts on Fridays, you can see that we stay busy but I don’t often MAKE TIME FOR MYSELF. I’m always busy stepping on legos, building railways, or finger painting. If I’m not doing that, I’m doing laundry or making meals and snacks. Kids. Why do they get messy and always need to eat?! This is ridiculous – one kid and all this laundry!
When I start to feel stressed out, overwhelmed, and generally cranky, I love getting together with other moms. It is a fun, easy, and affordable way to recharge your mom batteries.
And a bit of this helps too:
Tia Mowry-Hardrict is the star of Instant Mom, and embraces her role as stepmom, Stephanie, whole heartedly. Like many mothers, she was “thrown” into it. The one thing you’re not given when you leave the hospital is a Field Guide to Motherhood. The same holds true for becoming a stepmother. Yet she embraces it with humor and grace!
My girlfriends and I were talking about the funny advice we were given as first time parents and imagined what it would be like to receive the same advice as a stepmother of an older child:
Don’t let them chew on your shoes.
Don’t let them bathe alone.
Don’t give them solid food for at least six months.
Don’t let them wear socks, they’ll be too hot.
Don’t let them sleep alone.
Don’t sleep with them.
Don’t let her wear blue, people will think she is a boy.
It sounds just as crazy no matter the age of the child! Right? We had a blast watching the new programming, enjoying our adult beverages, and laughing about the crazy advice that people like to hand out to parents.
What was the craziest advice you received as a first time parent?
NickMom and Instant Mom are great go-to resources when you’re looking to relax and unwind after a long day of parenting.
I’m trying to think back to the craziest advice but all I can remember is the best advice I got from my aunt. She said to enjoy your kids and not worry about your house always looking perfect. The mess will be there but the kids grow up so fast. You’ll blink and miss it. She was right. My oldest is now 15 and youngest is 9.
I try to remember that too, but somedays – the toys! Geez they seem to multiply overnight! Thankfully, my son is great about picking up before we sit down for dinner.
I’m working on my post now! Love the pictures!
Oh man, I can’t remember any of the funny advice I received. But I remember thinking people were nuts when I was pregnant. I like that “don’t let them chew on your shoes.” That’s probably a good idea 🙂
People will give you so much advice as a new parent and most of it isn’t relevant. My Mother-In-Law teased me for reading so many pregnancy and newborn books. She reminded me, “That baby will teach you everything you need to know” which was incredibly true!
It sounds like your Mother-in-Law gave you great advice!
This sounds like a really fun show, I’ll have to check it out! I watched a lot of Nick at Nite as a kid, so this would be really cool!
The craziest advice I received was with child #2. The doctor told me that if she started nursing wildly, that it was just a growth spurt and that I could supplement with formula. (GASP!) As a second time mom, I knew that if I didn’t just nurse and nurse and nurse her on demand, that my milk supply would never keep up, so I just rolled my eyes and kept doing what I was doing. I can’t remember anything completely off the wall. I don’t usually listen to people anyways. 🙂 #client
haha! “I don’t usually listen to people anyways.” – neither do I!
