I’m sure by now you’ve heard the story about the parents in Volusia County Florida who are picketing at an Elementary School over new guidelines in place to protect a first grader with a peanut allergy. Picketing over peanuts?!
That is nuts! {Pun intended!}
The school is requiring that lunches be left outside the classroom and that students wash their hands when returning from lunch. I don’t see what the big deal is. These seem like fairly easy accommodations to make, and very simple for first graders to accomplish. So, what’s the big deal? These picketing parents are claiming that these two simple requests are violating their children’s rights! Again, this is nuts!
It’s absolute nonsense that parents are picketing – what are they teaching their children? How to make someone feel badly because they are different? Nice. And we wonder why there is so much bullying going on in schools. I guess it is being taught at home.
Honestly, if The Boy had a life threatening allergy – as this little girl allegedly does – I would not trust that everyone was going to follow the rules to ensure The Boy’s safety. This is a life we’re talking about. As a parent, why would you rely on others to keep your child alive? When you decide to become a parent, you are the one responsible for ensuring the child makes it. Day one, you’re there feeding, diapering, and clothing. Day one thousand one, you’re there helping to eat, helping to wipe a bum, and helping to dress. Day ten thousand one, you may be {still} providing a meal {at Christmas?}, giving a roll of toilet paper {kid struggling to pay off those mounting student loans from that over-priced college?!}, and clothing {at birthdays?}. We all signed up for this – and so much more – when we watched as that little line turned pink on the pee stick.
To the parents of this little girl – protect her yourself. Make the hard choice to home school her and protect her. She needs your help. Don’t rely on the children of these picketing parents to do it for you.
To the picketing parents – teach your kids to wash their hands because it is GOOD HYGIENE! Stop the bullying.
What would you do if your child had a life threatening food allergy? How would you react if your child’s classmate had an allergy as severe as this?
