Over the last few years, the quotes that inspire me have changed. A few days ago, I was looking back through old planners and they were filled with career-minded, go-after-it quotes. Things like:
“Principles are timeless and universal, and are the foundation for lasting effectiveness.” – Franklin Covey
“Effective leadership is putting first things first. Effective management is discipline, carrying it out.” -Stephen Covey
“People who don’t fit the mold are treated differently than those who do.” – Carly Fiorina
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” Michelangelo
Life in Corporate America can be cutthroat. It was always so important to keep those quotes that inspire me front and center. I remember having quotes taped to my computer monitor and writing down nearly every inspiring thought that I had.
Fast forward a year or so, to the first time The Texan and I met with the doctor we’d chosen for our pediatrician. He offered a few words of advice, too.
This resonated with us, and is advice that I share with new parents and parents-to-be. At the time, I didn’t realize how important his statement was. We never tiptoed around the house, or told people that they had to whisper if The Boy was resting. In fact, that is when I would vacuum, listen to music, and catch up with my friends on the telephone – which meant a lot of loud laughter!
Last year while reading Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Happiness Project, I stumbled upon this quote:
I remind myself this each time I feel challenged with parenting. Having a 3 year old for a boss can be quite taxing on a person!
Quotes are important and relevant to your life depending on what your goals and focus are at that time. Now that I am a mother, one of my goals is to be present and participate in my son’s life. The quotes from my corporate days are reminders of the woman that I thought I wanted to be, but not the woman I was destined to become.
What are some of your favorite quotes?
