This year, I am excited to teach The Boy more about the importance of giving. The holiday season is often filled with “I wants” and fun celebrations, but it is important to remember those who are less fortunate.
Last weekend, The Boy and I went to a local toy store and selected a few items to donate to a local charity. The first few minutes in the store was a difficult time for The Boy. He didn’t understand that the toys we were choosing were for another little boy and not for him. We talked about how there are some children that do not have as much as he does, that we are selecting toys for a little boy to make him feel happy and that it is important to always think of others. He warmed up to the idea after about 3 minutes of whining. In the end, we chose a board game, a bulldozer, and a truck that transports vehicles. The Boy was excited to drop them off at the donation spot and has asked about the little boy since then.
Because I want to encourage The Boy to have a giving spirit, I decided to sort through The Boy’s clothing and donate the items that he’s outgrown. I talked about what I was doing, and The Boy told me that it was nice. Just this morning, The Boy tried on a sweater from last winter which ended up being too small, he immediately asked if we could “give it to that other little boy.”
I feel like I’m doing a great job instilling the importance of giving back and lending a helping hand this holiday season. I plan to include The Boy in more acts of giving throughout the year.
My friends at Hormel Foods have offered to make a donation to a local food pantry in the name of one lucky Nap Time is My Time reader! Simply follow the easy steps on the Rafflecopter form below and you’ll be entered! With so many food pantries struggling this year, this is another great way to lend a helping hand!
Disclosure: This post was written as part of my participation in the Hormel Foods Extended Family Blogger Program. While Hormel Foods provides me material and necessary resources to complete various activities, the thoughts and statements in this post are my own.

We just did the same thing at our house – cleaned out my son’s room of old clothes and some of his toys. I explained to him how he’s outgrown them and how someone smaller than him can still make use of them. He really liked the concept and was quite proud of himself.
We are giving back by donating food and toys in local community drives.
We give back by donating food to our local “stuff a truck ” at Thanksgiving. We give toys at Christmas for Toys for Tots. We volunteer for “Green Up” day to clean up our town.
It is just my cat & I here–but I do try as often as I can afford to to send a donation to food pantries. I also can not walk past a Salvation Army Bell Ringer–or ignore those pleas for help at the cash registers.
We always adopt a family…have a lot in my gift closet to donate!
We donate toys, clothes and food whenever possible. I have worked in soup kitchens before and would love to get the kids involved once they get older

We donate clothes and household items throughout the year – we also buy extra groceries every time we go and then bring to our local food pantry at the end of each month. Christmas is always a great time to donate to Toys for Tots and pick names off of the Angel Tree.
We have been getting together donations for the local hurricane victims.
During this holiday season, we donate toys to local toy drives and canned goods for families to have a holiday dinner. Recently, we also had a bake sale to raise money for a charity! 🙂
We always donate toys this time of year.
We donated to a collection the Boy Scouts were doing for disabled vets.
I am in charge of the holiday cheer program at my daughter’s elementary school. She is 8 years old and will be helping me every morning this week before going to her class. She helped make the tags to hang up for parents/teachers to adopt, and this week we are sorting all the items coming in before it is time to wrap them. Our school is sponsoring about 100 children in the community.
We give toys for the children at our local children’s hospital.
We have donated toys to various charities and organizations, and have also donated food to our local food pantry. Our local library also runs a giving tree in which an “ornament” can be taken off the tree listing a child (or family) in need of a toy.
we donate gently used clothes and shoes
We donate gently used items from our house regularly and donated food to the food bank for Thanksgiving.
We have sponsored a little boy with special needs this Christmas to help him get the things he both wants and needs. We also annually donate canned goods around Thanksgiving and then coats/mittens/scarves to our local People’s City Mission.
We donate new toys and wrap presents at Elf Louise in San Antonio TX. We also clean out the toy room and dresser drawers to give away gently used items to the Rainbow house.
This holiday season we helped our kids sort their toys and give unused ones to a local women’s shelter!
This year my family chose to sponsor another family in our community and we are giving them an entire Christmas meal. From the ham to the pie on the table it will all be taken care of. We are also making sure each of the 3 boys has at least one gift. The mother is a single mom whose husband was killed overseas this last year in military actions and she is struggling emotionally and financially during this time of year. Its the least we can to do make sure her Christmas has some joy.
I donate when I can, clothes, toys ect..
