This week, I have had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a variety of companies by calling the toll free numbers that they provide for their customers. It seems that all of the major businesses have an automated attendant that directs you in an endless loop.
I find it so frustrating. When all I want to do is speak to a representative, I do not want to spend my time listing to a creepy voice saying “Press One to do hear your account balance” or “Press Two if you cannot understand this message and need to listen to this message in another language” What happened to service?
Do you remember not too long ago when you would call a toll free number and a live person would answer on the second or third ring? It seems that is quickly becoming a distant memory for me. You may recall that I used to work for a Fortune 500 company. One of the many roles that I had there was answering a toll free phone line and responding to questions, compliments and complaints. Although it wasn’t an easy job, one thing that I was proud of was that we actually answered the calls and did not subject our callers to those automated systems.
It’s too bad that more companies are not on board with that. What do you think about calling toll free numbers?
