Have you ever visited a blog for “a quick sec” and found yourself there more than an hour later? That’s what happened to me a few days ago as I was browsing through the great posts that Stacey shares on her blog, Newlywed Survival. One that got me thinking was her post Working Out with your Spouse.
I don’t know about you, but I prefer NOT to work out with my husband. My husband plays rugby and does CrossFit. I like yoga and walking. Our preferences are too different, they don’t mesh for work outs.
Let me tell you about the ONLY time we worked out together. We were training for a 5K to benefit the National Kidney Foundation. This was when we lived in Florida, long before The Boy was born. Each morning we would wake more than an hour earlier than we normally would and run together. It was not a good time. For me, anyway. I hated being up that early, running on the street in the dark, but that’s the best time to run outside in Florida.
I have a runners stride, way back in high school I was a member of the cross country and the track and field teams. The Texan isn’t a runner for running, he’s a runner for rugby or football. Anyhow, We were running about 2 miles each morning to get ready for the race. The route we ran was flat, and boring. There was not much to see. But there was a wonderful smell. At first, I could not identify what it was. The further I ran, the more awake I was. And, my senses were awakening, too. I realized that the smell was Krispy Kreme donuts.
No. We never ran to the Krispy Kreme shop. Though it was tempting.
At first.
After the third day, the stench of Krispy Kreme was enough to make you gag. To me, it began to smell like chicken soup.
To this day, I haven’t eaten either.
Do you work out with your spouse? What is the experience like for you?

I can’t imagine ever growing tired of the smell of donuts…
My husband likes to go to the gym and lift weights, I prefer home work outs and dancing… But we go on family hikes together! 🙂
Oh, Camille, you would grow tired of it! Imagine running on a humid day with no breeze, the smell of the donuts would hang in the air. Don’t get me wrong, it was great at first. Almost an incentive to keep running…but then it became overwhelming.
Thanks so much for stopping by!
So glad you enjoy my blog Emily!
I know what you mean about not enjoying a smell after prolonged exposure. I lived above a Subway in college. It took me a long time before I could eat there again. 🙂
Oh – I can’t imagine LIVING above a restaurant. I’m surprised you’re able to eat there at all.
Thanks so much for stopping by, I really enjoyed your blog. It’s a wealth of great information.
I have a love hate relationship when it comes to working out with my husband. Because after years and years of sports training…I just want to go on a leisurely run. My husband on the other hand loves to continue his intense football workouts with sprints and timed miles. When we do run together,it usually starts with me saying…” You make me hate running.” But when we finish, I am always thanking him for how great I feel.
Isn’t it strange how we hate to start out, but appreciate the workout at the end! Thanks for stopping by!
