I say this all the time, I can’t believe how quickly my son is growing up. We went from watching him roll over on the carpet to watching him ride his bicycle down the street. Where does the time go? It all passes so quickly. I’m learning to cherish the memories and enjoy the ride as we enter each new phase.
The smaller transitions are the biggest challenges for me. Going from the newborn “bucket” car seat to a rear-facing car seat was tough. Then switching The Boy’s seat to forward facing – GAH! You really have a toddler at that point. Around the time of switching car seats, comes changes to a boy’s bedroom, too. Out with the teddy bears, in with the dinosaurs, planes, and automobiles! One of my projects for the winter ahead is to re-decorate The Boy’s bedroom. I’m excited, though dreading the painting part because of the dark existing wall color!
Don’t get me wrong, decorating a boy’s bedroom can be fun and exciting. One of my goals with this project is to create three defined zones: a homework station, a play area, and a quiet area for sleeping and reading. We’re fortunate that The Boy has a very LARGE bedroom and we’ll be able to accommodate the three zones with ease.
3 Must Haves for Decorating a Boy’s Bedroom
1) A timeless wall color. Don’t go too bold or too bright. You want to choose a wall color that you don’t mind looking at for the next six years. {The gentleman at my local home improvement store said interior paint should last 6-10 years. Personally, I get bored with the paint color long before the six year mark.} Choose a neutral gray or pale blue.
2) A quality bed that is age appropriate. When The Boy graduated from his toddler bed to a twin, I knew it was the right size for him. Others were encouraging me to use a larger size bed because of the size of his bedroom. However, I knew a low height twin bed was perfect for him and would be comfortable for him until age 7 or 8. Be sure that the mattress AND the frame are durable; kids in this age range can be rough!
(see that dark wall color I referenced earlier! Yikes!)
3) Quality Flooring The Boy is at the age where he LOVES to get down on the floor and play with his trains and legos. Choosing a durable carpet, like Mohawk SmartStrand Silk, is important. I want The Boy to feel free to be a kid and not worry about stains on the carpeting.
The kind folks at Mohawk sent me a sample carpet square. It is oh so soft and has built in stain and oil protection that never wears or washes off.
I couldn’t help myself, I poured fruit punch on that cute little carpet square.
And you know what? It did not stain. I cleaned it with water and a microfiber cloth. No cleaning product at all; just water. This is a durable product that parents can count on to hold up to their active children! Before you start redecorating, head to your neighborhood Mohawk retailer and check out this carpeting.

My son is now 16, but I can remember well decorating his room when he was younger. 🙂 I can attest that all of the above are terrific suggestions!
We went with a nice tan in my son’s room at his dad’s and it was definitely the right choice. At 5, he’s waiting to transition from his construction decor to Minecraft. If we had done orange walls or something, I think I’d be sick to my stomach. LOL
I will be sharing this with my bestie who’s having a baby boy next month!
Thanks so much for the tips! I’ve been wanting to update my boy’s bedroom and these are great tips! #client
I think #1, a timeless wall color applies to any bedrooms… who wants to paint every time the color trends change? Not this girl!! LOL
Love those little dinosaur pictures! Super cute!
That carpet looks so comfy, I love it!
