With a cold winter rapidly approaching, now is a great time to start thinking about ways to become more energy efficient in the home. Making a few simple adjustments will have you saving energy and money in no time.
1| Use the Quick Cycle Setting on your washing machine. The quick cycle setting uses less water and less energy while still cleaning your clothing. Washing with cold or tap temperature water is another way to use your washer in a more energy efficient manner.
2| Insulate your water heater. Insulating your water heater with a jacket will help to keep the water in your heater warm. Be sure that your water heater is set at a reasonable temperature as well, typically 120°F.
3| Switch to CFL bulbs. Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs plug into a standard socket and use less energy than a traditional bulb. In many areas, if you sign up for a home energy audit, you’ll receive some CFL bulbs at no charge!
4| Seal Your Windows Consider sealing your windows with a thin film this winter to ensure the cold air does not creep in.
5| Install a Programmable Thermostat Setting your thermostat below 68°F in the colder months can save between 3-5% off your energy costs. Put on an extra sweater, thicker socks, and maybe a scarf. Warm up with a hot cup of tea or cider.
Now through November 23, PG&E is hosting a fun Instagram Photo Challenge Contest with a chance to win Home Depot gift cards. You can check out the great photos on Instagram using the hashtag #PGEhome.
