I wanted to make sure that you get the chance to see how easy it is to get Santa’s Key ready for the upcoming Christmas holiday!
When I was a child, our home lacked a fireplace. I asked my parents how Santa would be able to get into our house to deliver my presents. “Santa is magic,” was their usual answer. Despite their answer being L-A-M-E, I believed them.
Our current home does not have a fireplace, and I don’t want to give The Boy the same answer that my parents gave to me. I know that it is important to keep the magic of Christmas alive as long a possible, and making Santa’s Key will help do that!
To make your own, you’ll need a printer, green (or red) scrapbook paper, glue, ribbon, single hole punch, and a skeleton key. You can purchase a skeleton key from your local locksmith or hardware store. I received a discount when I purchased mine as the one I chose was not cut correctly. Evidently, skeleton keys are still used for actual locks – not just craft projects!
Type (and print out) the following poem:
‘Twas the night before Christmas
I am excited as can be,
This year Mommy and Daddy told me
About a special key.
You can shimmy down the chimney
Or tip toe through the door
Use the magic in this key
To find cookies and more!
Print it out and adhere it to your scrapbook paper using glue. I used glue dots on the corners as I find them to be less of a mess than traditional glue.
Punch a hole in the top, slide skeleton key onto ribbon and slide ribbon through the hole. Be sure to tie a secure knot. Easy peasy, right? Here’s another look:
Merry Christmas, Everyone! I hope that Santa finds his way into all of your homes!

What a great idea! We didn’t have a fireplace either but my parents said Santa’s magic could unlock doors. The key is clever though!

I love these! Thank you for linking at Link-up Party #5: Hop to my blog Monday at KCS!
Thank you! It was fun to make, and I hope that Santa will be able to find his way into everyone’s home this season.
Awesome idea! My friend’s parents used to take a pair of boots and put ash from the fireplace on the bottoms and make boot-prints on the carpet coming from the fireplace. And I guess it comes right out with the vacuum
This is such a cute idea! We do have a fireplace, but a couple of my siblings don’t … going to pass this on to them. Love keeping the magic alive!
