I consider myself to be eco-friendly and conscious about the toxins that are in our world. My home is primarily free of chemicals, and I want to share a few easy ways to reduce chemical exposure in your home, too. I’m going to share these great tips with you because they are easy. And affordable. But first, I want to take a minute to check out this story, it will wake you up.
Easy Ways to Reduce Chemical Exposure in Your Home
Take off your shoes at the door
Did you know that 85% of the dirt found in your home is tracked inside on the bottom of your shoes? It isn’t just the visible dirt, but toxics like pesticides, gasoline residue, and lead. Taking off your shoes is the public health equivalent of washing your hands.
Buy Safer Body Care
Your skin is the body’s largest organ. What are you putting on yours? Children are exposed to an average of 27 care product ingredients daily which have not been found safe for developing bodies. Because of their smaller body size and rapid physical development, they’re more vulnerable to exposure to chemicals. Always, always avoid products with ingredients like parabens, synthetic fragrances, and tricolsan. Open Your Windows
Nearly 90 percent of our time is spent inside, and indoor air is typically more polluted than outside. Open Your Windows! Let the fresh air blow through the house. Even if it is just for a few minutes per day, your indoor air quality can be improved.
Eat More Whole Foods
As parents of busy children, it can be easy to grab processed food for the convenience, but they’re often loaded with sweeteners, artificial flavors and colorings, and synthetic preservatives. These convenience foods lack nutrients and many of their ingredients are linked to health issues like ADHD and certain cancers.
Researchers from the University of Washington suggests you can immediately and dramatically reduce the pesticide content in a child’s body by switching to organic foods, like Stonyfield Organic yogurts, smoothies, soy yogurts, ice cream and milk.
I know the thought of switching to all organic foods can be scary and you may think you cannot afford it. I’d recommend switching your dairy products immediately, especially if your children drink milk and eat yogurts and cheeses. Shopping for seasonal produce locally, participating in a community supported agriculture program, and buying in bulk are great ways to save. If you have a small family like mine, consider splitting the cost of these items with another like-minded family. There are more tips, including the much talked about Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen here.
