Adding a puppy to our family has been such a fun and rewarding adventure. With the recent natural disasters happening around the world, it was time for us to come up with an emergency prepardness plan for our dog. Follow these tips below to make an emergency preparedness plan for dogs.

When natural disaster strikes, it is important that your family is able to evacuate quickly. Natural disasters like hurricanes and wild fires are stressful situations, with an emergency plan ready to go some stress is eleviated. It’s important to include your pet in your emergency plan, they depend on you to ensure their safety.

Living in Florida, I spent a lot of time on high alert for natural disasters. We had dangerous wild fires burning just feet away from our home one summer. A few years later, we were hit with multiple hurricanes in a little over a month’s time. Those experiences taught me that we needed to be able to move quickly and that there may be little notice to gather supplies.

Back then, we put together an emergency kit for ourselves that held water, basic first aid supplies, cash, some canned goods, non-prerishable snacks, a deck of cards, and a camp stove that we could hook up to a small propane tank. We scanned our important documents and emailed them to ourselves in addition to printing a copy for storing in a ziptop bag. I didn’t want to risk water damaging documents.

Emergency Preparedness Plan for Dogs

1| Microchip your pet. Microchipping is an affordable way for a veternarian to identify your dog should you become separated for any reason.

2| Get a Pet Alert Rescue Sticker. Place the sticker near your front door and include the number of dogs and other pets you have in the home. This will help emergency responders know what they’re looking for.

3| Make sure your dog is wearing a collar. Include an identification tag and a rabies vaccine tag on your dog’s collar.

4| Prepare Emergency Supplies in a Travel Kit. Emergency supplies for your dog should include a leash, bowls for food and water, pet waste clean up bags, extra leash, toys, and at least a 7 day supply of food, like Nature’s Recipe.
