- When the going gets tough, take a break. There is a time in every mom and dad’s life where it is just time to step away from the chaos, and breathe. Staying in a stressful situation without giving yourself time to calm down can cause things to be said that we normally wouldn’t say, and can cause hurt feelings. Why make a situation worse when you can step out of the situation and return refreshed and ready to conquer!
- Don’t take parenting TOO seriously. Parenting is partially about having fun, and enjoying the mistakes along the way. Every little thing children do is a learning experience for them. So they made a mess, is it really the end of the world? Sometimes it’s the messes and the crazy days that make everlasting memories.
With these ideas parenting can become less of a stress, and more of a learning experience for both children and parents. The way we react to stressful situations, in the end, is what the children will pick up on. If we can keep our cool, they will learn coping mechanisms of their own and make life easier for not only themselves, but also mom and dad.
I believe it is important to not only keep your cool but to also keep an open mind. Advice can sometimes be unwanted, but there are times when we are stressed to the max that someone elses idea just MIGHT work. There is no right or wrong answer to parenting, as long as you know you did your very best. Parenting is personal for each person and we may not make the same decisions, but one thing we can come together on is knowing the hardships each of us face. It is sometimes easy to forget that every parent has to start somewhere, and it can become easy to judge others for the way they decide to parent. We each learn from our mistakes, and grow. The best advice I can possibly give, mom-to-mom, is to keep an open mind, and an open heart to new ideas.
With that being said, Have you ever been given advice that helped you grow as a parent?
