It’s hard to believe that nearly a year has gone by since my blog became self-hosted! Yahoo, Me! This year has been quite an adventure, and I am pleased with how much my blog has grown in that time. As I think about my renewal options, I am wondering if a dedicated server is the right option for me.
I have monitored my traffic closely during the last six months, and have noticed a steady increase. Three cheers for me! I love to see that my work is paying off. Blogging is fun, but it is hard to gauge your success at time. My blog loads fairly quickly on most days, and I have not received feedback from my readers saying otherwise. The shared server seems to be an okay option for now.
It would be wonderful to say “I have a dedicated server” but I am not sure that I am there yet. I don’t think my traffic is clogging up the shared server that I am currently using. I plan to research more about the dedicated server to see if it is, indeed, a great choice for me. I know that the cost will be more because I won’t be sharing the cost with any other users.
Going forward, I feel like I should research more and continue to monitor my traffic. If there is a huge increase that is taxing the shared server, then I’ll make the switch. For now, everyone pray for a huge traffic increase!
Do you use a dedicated server? What has your experience been like?

I just switched to a virtual private server because I kept getting throttled (and sometimes even taken down!) by my last host (which was a shared server). My blog is SO much faster now and it’s great not to have to worry about having good traffic! So if you’re looking to upgrade, but not quite ready to go the dedicated server route, consider a VPS. 🙂

Kiersten – Thanks for the tip! I’ll check into that, too!
