It’s appropriate the July is designated as National Hot Dog month. There are lots of people barbecuing and grilling. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans are expected to eat at least 7 billion hot dogs this summer. Sausage sales and consumption are on the rise too – with sales reaching $2 billion in 2011!
I was excited to see that Hormel Foods has added new sausage products to their Hormel Natural Choice line – including Chicken Sausages in spinach asiago, apple gouda, and jalapeno cheddar. The Hormel Natural Choice product line is 100% natural and free of preservatives. I know that The Boy will enjoy all three of these flavors. Even though he’s a toddler, his palate prefers savory and bold flavors.
We won’t be contributing much to the booming hot dog sales as we’re not fans of traditional dogs. We prefer turkey dogs. I like mine grilled with onions. Lots of onions. And yellow mustard. But not too much, I don’t want to mask the flavor of the onions! No ketchup for me. Ketchup has no place on a hot dog. My dad, on the other hand, likes his hot dogs boiled and loaded with chili, onions, and cheese. There are so many ways to enjoy a hot dog.
What’s your favorite topping?
