Over the holidays, many happy couples announce that they’ll be welcoming a baby into their family. Now is a great time for you to start thinking about gifts for their little one. A State Silhouette Onesie is a unique, thoughtful gift that new parents will love!
Super cute, don’t you think. I made this for my college roommate when she announced her pregnancy. She currently lives in California and loved the creative state silhouette onesie.
What You’ll Need:
Onesie or tee {be sure to launder first!}
Embroidery thread in red and another color of your choice
Printed copy of state outline
Disappearing ink pen
What You’ll Do:
While the onesie is washing, go online and google “Map of [insert state name here]” and select your state template. Some states, like my homestate of Massachusetts have a lot of detail, and some states, like Utah, don’t. You’ll want to select the one that is as detailed as you’d like. The first one that I printed was way too detailed. I’d still be stitching the shirt!
Place the printed outline of your state inside the onesie and position so that it is even, and located where you want it on the shirt. Using your disappearing ink pen, trace the outline of the state onto the onesie. {The dark spot that appears on this shirt was a county that was highlighted for one reason or another. I happened to like this detailed map the best.}
Remove the paper from inside the onesie. Split the colored embroidery floss into two strands. Typically, embroidery floss is six strands wound together, that is too bulky for this project. Thread your needle and make a knot.
Begin sewing your onesie using a simple straight stitch. Continue until you have completed the entire outline of your chosen state. I added a red “you are here pin” to indicate the mother’s hometown. My intent was to make a heart, but let’s just say I’m not as crafty as I’d like to think I am! Here’s the finished product, again.
The State Silhouette Onesie is a perfect gift to welcome new babies! Make multiple state silhouette onesies – one for mom’s homestate, dad’s homestate, where the couple met, where they were married, where they honeymooned, and where they currently live! Go ahead – be creative!

This one’s really easy and simple. I will try this thing as well but not for onesie but for my t-shirts.

I love this–it turned out fabulous! I think I could manage to do maybe Colorado, but I don’t know if I’d have the skills for a Massachusetts onesie. 🙂

It was time consuming, but I love how it turned out. I think Alaska would be the hardest with all of those itty bitty islands!
