My first book club choice was was mildly funny. Not even semi-close to hysterical, which is what I’ve come to expect from Jen Lancaster. I thought perhaps I’d missed something, so I went back and read it again. Because I have so much free time.
I am aware that that Jen Lancaster has already written four New York Times bestsellers, but this one should have gone back to the editor. Seriously, I think someone else wrote it. She’s made a career out of making fun of herself, though her bitterness and quick wit didn’t show up very often in My Fair Lazy. But, her usual suspects, and antics, did! Sweet husband Fletch was back, and as patient as ever, her bestie writer Stacey appeared and coached her through several lessons in raising her cultural awareness, oh and trainer Barbie was in the book too. I’d nearly forgotten her. Nothing personal, Barbie, I’m just not big into working out. I might have read over “your parts” too quickly.
I’ll extend some praise by saying that her use of footnotes is great. In previous books, most of her humor comes from them. Perhaps reading this book on my Kindle caused me to not “get” all of the references which actually made the book funny?
My advice: If you’re new to Jen Lancaster, start with Bitter is the New Black and skip My Fair Lazy all together.
