If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know that I menu plan. In November of 2013, I began to focus on my family’s grocery budget AND what we were eating. I felt that we were spending a lot of money on food – not just groceries, but also dining out. We began following the USDAs Food Plan guide’s moderate spending plan for our family size and we’re continuing that for 2014.
With the current data available – through November 2013 – our family size is allotted $714.30 per month for our grocery budget. After straying a bit in December, and misplacing receipts, I wanted to create a new approach for our family. One that would work well for us.
Enter PeaPod.
Grocery delivery service is a wonderful idea. I was skeptical that they’d deliver produce on the verge of expiration and bruised fruits. That isn’t the case. The product that we’ve received has been superior to that which is available in my local grocery store. Granted, as I write this, we’ve only received one delivery; however, that delivery had perfectly sliced deli meats, adequately packaged seafood, fresh fruits, and eggs that weren’t broken! PeaPod for the win! This isn’t a sponsored post about the benefits of PeaPod, just my honest opinion.
This morning, I placed my second PeaPod order for delivery tomorrow. It’s helped greatly with menu planning, as I can quickly see what items are on sale and what I have in my pantry to pair with them. It is a time saver as I am eliminating the step of going to the store.
With the help of PeaPod – and one fill in trip to Trader Joe’s – this is what we’re eating this week:
Monday – Baked Chicken Breast with brown rice and green beans.
Tuesday – Turkey Tacos
Wednesday – Turkey Reubens
Thursday – Lasagna
Friday – Homemade chicken and pesto pizza
Saturday – Rugby Banquet
Sunday – Leftovers
Does your family stick to a budget or a menu plan? What tips do you have for making it work?

Thank you for this post! We are currently taking a hard look at our grocery budget and seeing how we can cut it back a bit. I wouldn’t have thought a grocery delivery service would be worthwhile, but now I’m thinking it’s an option we should look into. Would definitely help with impulse purchases in-store!
Hi Katie!
Thanks so much for stopping by. Having my groceries delivered is not only a time saver, but a money saver too! No impulse purchases. Yesterday, I ran into Trader Joe’s for three items – they were out of one, yet I managed to walk out the door having spent $45! Mostly impulse buys, except for the toilet paper and turkey bacon. I couldn’t stop myself from putting all of those extras in my cart – too much temptation for me!
My plan is to use the grocery delivery for three months – then reevaluate whether it is truly working. I’m working out a few kinks with how I am placing my order; but I am so hopeful that it will work. I love NOT spending an hour plus walking the aisles at the grocery store!
Have a fun day!
