This sewing project is perfect for a nap time project as it takes about 30 minutes to whip up. I love projects that are simple and useful.
How to Sew a Picnic Blanket
As with every sewing project, the first step is to gather your supplies. For this picnic blanket, you’ll need a twin size flat bed sheet, vinyl tablecloth, and coordinating thread.
With wrong sides facing together, line up the bed sheet and the vinyl table cloth. The wrong side of the table cloth is the fuzzy backing. The fuzzy backing helps the sheet lay flat against the table cloth while providing a little bit of cushion to your picnic blanket. Cut the excess fabric from the bed sheet so the sheet is the same size and shape as the vinyl tablecloth.
When sewing, it’s important to prep your fabric by ironing it. To iron the vinyl tablecloth, set your iron to the lowest setting and move your iron quickly back and forth over the flannel side. Any creases should be easily removed. Increase the temperature on your iron then iron the bedsheet to remove any wrinkles.
Once the fabric is prepped, please the right sides together, pinning the fabric well and stitching around leaving a 6-inch opening on one side.
Turn the blanket right side out through the opening.
To close the opening, top stitch around the entire picnic blanket, using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
We’ve had nothing but rain since the day I made this picnic blanket. But, it’s ready to see some fun once things dry out!
My picnic blanket is washed and ready to go. I used the affordable Purex® Crystals Fresh Spring Waters in-wash fragrance booster when laundering it. This scent allows you to freshen your wardrobe with the shimmering light of Fresh Spring Waters to brighten your everyday. It’s easy to use and safe for all loads, including towels, activeware, and children’s sleepwear. Purex Crystals provide a great scent at a great price! I found Purex Crystals in the laundry aisle at my local Stop & Shop supermarket.

We always use old sheets for picnic blankets, but they don’t do anything to keep the water away if the grass is wet. A vinyl picnic blanket like this would be perfect for a day outdoors as a family. Thanks for the tutorial! #client
