The first task for the exciting Spring Cleaning event with Ask Anna was cleaning/washing drapes and blinds. Lucky me, we don’t have many windows with blinds, curtains or anything else hanging on them! That’s great for me because Saturday was such a nice day I really didn’t want to be trapped inside cleaning.
The Texan and I took The Boy to the playground for some fun on the slide and out for a quick lunch. The Boy was worn out, but I was energized and ready to tackle the task! I even remembered to grab the camera and snap this photo of the {hideous} living room curtains before I took them down.
I removed the curtains from the windows – we have these two that sit right next to one another and one other window on the wall directly across – and was amazed by how much additional light came in to the room. Yippie! I love, love, love daylight. That’s one of the reasons we don’t have many window coverings in our home. Also, our home was built in the early 1960s, and evidently people didn’t care for daylight back then because we have very few windows and very little natural light.
I looked at the pile of flimsy, white curtains sitting on the floor and realized that they serve no purpose. They do not protect us from the rays of the sun, nor the chill of the harsh Cape Cod winters. As I was taking them down, choking on the dust, I decided that we needed new curtains. These were too ugly to wash and hang again. Cool, off to shop I go! Or so I thought…
I washed the glass and even more light was filtered into the room! Rock on! This is awesome. See how green these azalea bushes are? (Hopefully this year they’ll bloom, we didn’t have any luck last year.) You can see them because the winter filth is gone!
There was NO WAY curtains of any type were going back up on these windows. I love how much light is coming into our living room now. It is wonderful. Perhaps next winter I’ll change my mind and opt for new curtains, but until then…I’ve The Texan removed the curtain rods and filled the holes with wood putty. We don’t have any trim paint, so that’s another project for sometime later this week!
Thank you, Anna, for making my home more comfortable for us to live in with your first task! You rock! I’m looking forward to Task #2!
