Ask Anna has been keeping us busy with our Spring Cleaning project. The second task was dusting. Yahoo. Dusting is one of those things that I loathe. Especially when you’re doing a thorough dusting, like we did with Ask Anna.
She wanted us to remove everything from all of our shelves – bookcases, kitchen cabinets, etc. – clean it well, reduce and recycle the unused junk items, and replace everything. Also, if you have ceiling fans don’t leave those hanging – dust them too! Yesterday was a beautiful day for dusting here, it was overcast, slightly humid and nearly 60 degrees. I opened up the two windows which have screens, gathered my cleaning supplies and camera, I was ready to go.
I decided to start in the kitchen. One advantage to living in a charming, cozy home is that you don’t have a lot of cabinets – or space – which means you can’t store a lot of junk you don’t need. The weekend before last, I broke a glass in the cabinet while unloading the dishwasher. So, I’ve already cleaned that space out, but as you can see the hutch we store our plates and bowls in really needed some attention. The glass was covered in finger prints, the top had become a dumping ground for all sorts of crap. I can’t even believe that I’m sharing this photo! How embarrassing…and it gets worse!
After removing all of the plates and bowls, I was horrified by the amount of dust in this cabinet. It’s to be expected since I can’t remember the last time I actually emptied it out and cleaned it. It MUST have been last Spring. I hope! Look at all of that dust. Isn’t it amazing. Gross…our plates were in there. ICK!
I threw away most of that junk you see on top, or relocated it back to it’s home. My itty bitty kitchen is much less cluttered now – and so clean!
On to the living room. We don’t have any bookcases or built in cabinets. I try to keep surfaces that can attract clutter to a minimum. We do have this lovely shelving unit from Ikea that we use to hold The Boy’s toys and our electronics. It was filthy too.
You can see we have trucks, cars, books, puzzles, pictures, videos {if that’s what they’re still called!}, and electronic devices…and all of these things LOVE DUST. Almost as much as my plates.
I took all of the toys and other crap out of the unit, dusted, reorganized and replaced. I’m so pleased with how pretty {and clean} it is now!
There was an optional task, clean your houseplants – alive or fake – but lucky me I don’t have either!
Be sure to stop by Ask Anna to see the other Spring Cleaning Challenge participant’s reveal their clean, happy spaces!
