This month, we are reading The Magic Room: A Story About The Love We Wish For Our Daughters by Jeffrey Zaslow. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I do not have a daughter that I did not enjoy the book. I wanted to love it, but I didn’t. Or couldn’t.
We’re taken to the small, middle-class community of Fowler, Michigan. A town with 1100 residents, and a bridal shop with 2500 wedding dresses. Becker’s Bridal has played a part of 100,000 weddings across the midwest. That is amazing. And those 100,000 weddings were all imagined in the minds of the brides who stepped inside the ‘Magic Room’ – an 8 foot by 10 foot room with floor-to-ceiling mirrors on every wall.
Each woman in the ‘Magic Room’ has her own issues – these stories and secrets are shared with the reader, but failed to pull me in. The Texan and I have been married for six years and I often appreciate insights into successful marriages and families. However, this book was lacking in that area. For me anyway.
If you enjoy listening to stories of how so-and-so chose her wedding dress, this book is right up your alley. If you’re looking for something more substantial, you won’t find it here.
