I’ve been blogging for over two years. And hardly anyone that I know in my “off-line” life knows about it.
I kept it a secret in the beginning because I didn’t want to listen to anyone’s criticisms that I am “wasting my time” on the internet, or that I am “too progressive”. And, I certainly didn’t want to have to defend my opinion on certain issues.
2013 is going to be a big year of change for me. As I work to be more present in my own life, and in the lives of others around me, I am sure that I will begin to discuss this blog more. I am proud of the work that I do here, and want to share it with even more people!
What secrets have you been keeping from your family and friends?
Disclosure: This post was inspired by mystery thriller novel The Expats by Chris Pavone.
Kate Moore sheds happily sheds her old life become a stay at home mom when her husband takes a job in Europe. As she attempts to reinvent herself, she ends up chasing her evasive husband’s secrets. Join From Left to Write on January 22 as we discuss The Expats. As a member, I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

I have not been keeping secrets but somethings I just try to avoid discussing with family/friends. My family abd friends are always the first to know about my blogs lol
Emily says
I have a laundry list of things that I don’t discuss with family & friends. We all have to keep the peace one way or another, right?!
Kelly @ Texas Type A Mom says
I only managed to keep blogging quiet from friends for about 6 months. Then when I had 20 circus tickets that I was passing out and not accepting payment for – the questions started coming. Now they know I do it but I don’t know if they read much because they don’t comment but if I ever have a new toy they just assume it’s a review item.
Emily says
Are you surprised that they don’t comment? The few friends that know about my blog don’t comment either, but they do interact a bit on my facebook page.
jodifur says
That’s funny, my post about the expats was about not telling anyone about my blog.
Emily says
Jodi – I think there are more of us out there than we know!
Star Traci says
I don’t know that I keep secrets, per se but I do avoid talking about certain subjects (e.g. politics) with a lot of my family. I am on the opposite side of the aisle from many of them and while I respect their opinions, they do not always do the same.
I applaud you for choosing to be more present in your life and proud of your blog. I wish you a wonderful 2013!
I stopped over from the Bloggy Mom January Blog Hop.

I avoid talking politics, eating habits, cleaning products, and so much more with much of my family. I know that they all think I’m quirky and strange, but hopefully they’ll accept the fact that I share my opinions in a thoughtful manner.
Have a wonderful 2013 as well!

Congrats on coming out of the closet! ๐ It took me nearly 2 years to come clean to everyone, too. It was exhilarating–frightening–wonderful. I’m glad that I did it.
Emily says
Thank you! I am excited and apprehensive at the same time.
Have a great day!

My extended family barely found out about my blogging, and was like why didnt you tell me? I just told a teacher at my daughters school, that Ive known for 3 years, she was so surprised. But I mainly started telling them because Im going to help the school start a reading blog and had to let everyone know about my experience with blogging! ๐
Emily says
That’s great to hear that you’ll be helping the school start a reading blog! It’s wonderful that your blogging experience is enabling you to give back to your children’s school. And, fostering a love of reading at an early age is so important. I wonder how many of them you’ll inspire to become bloggers when they grow up. ๐

I told my super supportive sorority ladies first as it was started in part to further our service commitment to food banks. But I have just started it, my co-workers know but not my mom—is that weird?
Emily says
You should tell your mom! Especially since your co-workers know. And, she’d be proud to hear about what you’re doing with food banks.

Interesting point of view. I actually have made a goal this year to share less. To be more private about things and more conscious of who I let into my life. At the same time, however, I’ve also made it a goal to be more outgoing and try to meet more people. There is a happy medium. I hope I find it before the close of 2013!

There is a happy medium. I find being too guarded isn’t making me happy. This year, as I focus on being more present – that also means sharing a bit more, but without being overly share-y. If that makes sense!
Thanks so much for stopping by, I appreciate it!

Few people know about my blogging. I think some would look at it as some hobby and get the wrong idea that I get alllll kinds of free stuff etc. and that’s so not the case. And I think it’s easy writing when I don’t think about people I know reading it. That’s me and something I need to not care about so much. Good for you to combine your two worlds!
Emily says
Writing not know who is reading it certainly makes it easier. You don’t have to feel so guarded – and wonder “should I say this” or “should I not have said that”? It’s a fine line, and I hope that crossing it turns out to be a good thing!
Eva @ SocaMom.com says
Sometimes I stay away from talking about the blog because I don’t want to answer the question, “How do I start a blog?” at that particular time – It is never a short answer!
Emily says
Yes, and that question is often quickly followed by “How much money can I make?”!
Gena says
My relatives and FB friends know about my blog, but I am embarrassed to tell people. I totally wish I had an anonymous blog sometimes!! It would make posting things a lot easier!
Other than that, I don’t keep many secrets.
Emily says
That’s interesting Gena! Why are you embarrassed to tell strangers?
Jennifer C. says
I haven’t told my mother in law about my blog yet. I just barely started my blog in October or November, and I don’t post very often yet (something I am working on). Any tips for me would be appreciated!
